Chinese New Year Win

Winston Cup 2018The Royal Selangor Polo Club held its first club cup of the year.  It was nice to win the Winston Cup, even though it was not named for my 4 y.o. gelding that Hannah Daniels has been breaking in.  My team of Camilla Sugden, Niels Madsen, Samsuri Ismail and myself won both our 4-chukka games rather easily, which was a bit of a surprise. R&R

The Chinese New Year public holidays last week meant that many horses had two days off work.  Rarely do we give performance horses to consecutive days of “stable rest” without working them.  Watching the horses come out for work on Sunday morning, it was clear which horses had been locked up for two days – they were the ones bucking and squealing, happy to be out of their stable. Season’s Start

ConquerorSaddleandBridlePackage20180208The polo season has started.  A new year, another season.  It is a time that I check all my equipment and replace or repair whatever is faulty or about to break.  Continue reading

Spurred On

rowelsjpgI had the pleasure of course designing the STCEC Chinese New Year Show this weekend.  It was my first course designing work of the year.  What I noticed was that Big Spurs are trending, not only amongst the uniformed units, but also young girls and 50 cm riders alike. Continue reading

Rain Gauge

The start of the Thai Polo Open was rain affected, and the Thai Polo Masters that was supposed to happen this weekend has been postponed because of rain. It is unseasonal to have such rain at this time in Thailand.  Malaysia is not spared.   In January, only one chukka was completed at the Royal Selangor Polo Club. Continue reading

Goal Driven

goalLike I’m sure many of you will have done, I reviewed the resolutions I set myself last year. And I’m sure, like many of you, I found I hadn’t been all that resolute.  Yes, I did stick to a few of my resolutions, but quite a few were held over to 2018, longer term resolutions, if you like. Continue reading

Preseason and Thai Polo Open

Back to work, back to school for the kids, back to life, back to reality.  2018 is here, and it better be a good one.   On the polo front, we will be bringing the polo ponies back into fitness, with an aim to start playing probably in mid-February.  I have a little course designing planned for 2018, fitted in when it works with my polo calendar. Continue reading

A Holiday To End 2017

beach photo 2017I took time out to go on a family holiday to Sri Lanka.  It was beautiful to get away with the family, when we can get the kids undivided attention.  The teenage boys will soon grow out of wanting these holidays, so we cherish our time with them as they are all growing up so fast.   For me, it was a period that I didn’t have to see, think or ride horses. As much as I love horses, it was a holiday away from them. Continue reading

The Social Umpiring Contract

Rick Sears, one of the most influential umpires in the world, has passed away.  Before he did, he wrote something that I think every polo player should read: Continue reading

Quality and Innovation

MalletBagDamageI made the long 32-hour trip back to Kuala Lumpur in one piece, although my new mallet bag didn’t survive the trip so well.  Nothing was lost from the bag, but the bag itself is a write-off, with the handle torn off and the bag itself ripped and a wheel broken.  Continue reading

A Great Final

Yesterday’s Argentine Open final was fantastic, one that will go down in the history books as one of the best finals.  History was made, but those of us who were lucky enough to experience it will remember it for the great game it was. Continue reading
