Saved By ONA

ONA-Elbow-Pads-Yellow-3My ONA elbow pads saved my season.  Playing club chukkas on Saturday, I took a full hit from 20 yards away to my left elbow.  Like so many elbow injuries, it was hit by a player on my own team.  We were heading towards goal, slightly right of it, and I was in front of the ball.  My concentration was on the opposing player to my right, and not the ball.  The hitter was trying to go slightly left, towards goal.  Instead, it went straight to me. Saudi Polo

al_jawharaI spent a few days in Saudi Arabia with Ali Reda, a renowned architect and polo and equestrian club designer.  It was at the invitation of a company that hopes to start polo in the kingdom.  It was an eye-opening visit for me, as I had never been to Saudi Arabia before. Continue reading

Specialization

Hookah Quiz HorseSo often when I meet a new rider, they tell me that they are a dressage specialist, or a showjumping specialist, or an endurance specialist.  So many specialists.   And often, when I ask a showjumper of dressage rider if they have tried any other disciplines, I get a queer look, and they tell me that they are Specialists, with a capital S.   And I usually think, “How boring it must be to do only that one thing all your equestrian life.” Continue reading

Hay You!

timothy_hayMany people still insist on feeding chaff to their horses.  I can’t understand why.  I haven’t fed chaff to my horses in over 12 years.  Instead of chaff, I feed hay, specifically Timothy Hay.  Not only is hay better for the horses, but I save a heck of money for myself and my owners. Continue reading

Calendar Changes

The RMPA Calendar saw two changes.  First, the RSPC League 2 was delayed a week so it will start on 24th June to 1st July.  Then the Malaysian Open brought forward from October to July.  It will become the curtain raiser of the RMPA’s 12-goal season, finishing just before the Malaysian high goal season starts.  It is hoped that as a 6 to 10 goal handicap and open tournament, it will link the medium and high goal teams. Continue reading

Game On

head hunters rspc league 1 2018The polo season started for me with the RSPC League 1.  Head Hunters entered a team which we made up with friends.  Playing with Mohd Effi, Yeo Kuo Lee, Stanley Sinnappen, Keith Teh and Shaik Reismann was a pleasure.  Shaik is a professional, but also a very good friend.  I have played many tournaments with Shaik over the years, and it was a real pleasure to play with him again. fire&rain_albumcoverHere is an unashamed and very proud plug for my sister, Jacintha Abisheganaden, who has just released her 13th studio album.  Fire & Rain is a James Taylor tribute album recorded in the audiophile genre.

Singer Jacintha’s first new album since 2007 features a fabulous selection of hits from the James Taylor catalog including: “You’ve Got A Friend,” “Sweet Baby James,” “Walking Man,” “Fire & Rain,” “Shower The People” and several other popular choices. Continue reading

Conduct

A question I have been asked a lot this week relates to conduct on or off the polo field, or lack of, as the case may be.  Unfortunately, polo isn’t always played by gentlemen or ladies.  What is a walk-off, when a team decides not to continue playing?  Is it Unsportsmanlike Conduct?  Or is it Misconduct?   The Hurlingham Polo Association rules make a difference between the two rules. Refillers

pja-nam derby course 2018Natasha and I did the dash to Ipoh for the Mitavite Horse Show over the weekend.  We got there on Friday afternoon as I wanted to scout the derby area for Sunday’s Fun In The Garden, as it was being called.   It was really nice to get out into the derby area for a walk around so that I could work out some ideas and measure some distances. I know Natasha, who was a very successful Eventing chair of EAM in her time, was a little nostalgic about walking around what used to be an eventing course.  Continue reading
