While the top brass of polo got invitations to play in His Majesty, the Sultan of Brunei’s 72nd birthday tournament, I will be at the top end of Borneo, in Kota Kinabalu this weekend. I will be conducting an RMPA umpires update and handicap assessments. I will also umpire a Sabah vs Kelantan match.
Sabah is something special, and KK is a favourite city of mine. The polo isn’t as high goal but they are a very enthusiastic bunch of players there. They don’t have many polo ponies, so the match will only be over two chukkas.
If anyone is near Tuaran, come to the racecourse. The big match will be on the polo field in the infield of the Royal Sabah Turf Club, at 4:30 pm on Saturday 14th July.
Sabah hospitality is legendary – you can never reciprocate the way they host you. The Sabah Polo Association will be lending the Kelantan players ponies for the game. I am sure the social events will revolve around the fantastic seafood available in KK.
Shaik Reismann was most recently there to conduct Rules Tests and a coaching clinic on behalf of RMPA a couple of years ago, but he will be playing in Brunei this week.
It has been a few years (2010) since I was last there and I am looking forward to the polo there again.
