EXCUSE : a reason or explanation put forward to defend or justify a fault or offense.
Excuses. Everyone has them. You would not be human if you did not make at least one excuse. I have heard a few and given a few too!
I was late due to traffic
I could not call you because I was so busy
I cannot quit smoking because my family keeps nagging me about it and stressing me
I could not ride well in the lesson because I have family issues / kids / wife to think about
I could not ride well because the horse was difficult / could not do what I wanted it todo
If only my horse did not stop at that fence, we could have won the class
Last week alone, I was given a number of excuses especially when I was coaching. A number of reasons as to why they were riding badly and how they had no time.. then I see a 13 year old girl wake up at 4am, get on a 630am flight from Penang to come for lessons. What a stark contrast!
Normally excuses are also followed by the sentence ‘ you would not understand!’.
Yes I do understand! I am inherently lazy and would lay on the couch all day eating pizza if I could. I could say my back hurts, that’s why I cannot exercise or cannot ride. But there comes a point where we have to stop giving excuses.
Everyone has their own different set of challenges but it is how they respond to them that matters. If you want to give an excuse, at least recognise it for what it is and man up. Own your excuse.
If you want something bad enough, in any part of your life, you will find a way to make it happen. You will stop making the excuses.
Now I suppose the real question you have to answer is :
DO YOU WANT IT ENOUGH TO MAKE AN EFFORT OR ARE YOU JUST GOING TO KEEP GIVING EXCUSES?
